1TB Desktop Hard Drive

The one 1TB desktop hard drive on this page is the Seagate BarraCuda ST1000DM014. It is a 3.5 inch SATA drive that spins at 7200 RPM, with a 256MB cache and Seagate's multi-tier caching. Seagate covers it with a 2 year warranty.

It suits a desktop that needs a second drive for documents, photos, backups or a game library. The usual setup pairs it with an SSD that holds Windows and your applications. It fits a standard 3.5 inch drive bay and needs two connections: a SATA data cable to the motherboard and a SATA power lead from the power supply.

Frequently asked questions

Will the ST1000DM014 fit in a laptop? No. It is a 3.5 inch desktop drive, and laptops take 2.5 inch drives.

Will it work with my motherboard? Yes, if the motherboard has a free SATA port and the cabinet has a 3.5 inch bay or a suitable adapter.

Can Windows be installed on this hard drive? It can, but boot and load times are much slower than on an SSD. It works better as storage alongside an SSD.
