The AMD motherboards here come from MSI, Gigabyte and ASUS and cover three sockets. AM5 runs from the entry MSI PRO A620M-E through the MSI MAG B850 TOMAHAWK MAX WIFI to the MSI MEG X870E GODLIKE, all on DDR5. AM4 boards such as the Gigabyte B550 AORUS ELITE V2, Gigabyte B450M DS3H V3 and ASUS PRIME A520M-K take DDR4. For Threadripper workstations there are the Gigabyte TRX50 AI TOP and TRX50 AERO D on sTR5. MSI covers its boards with a 3 year warranty.

Start with the processor. Ryzen 7000, 8000 and 9000 chips need an AM5 board. Ryzen 3000 and 5000 need AM4. Then pick the chipset. X870E and X870 add USB4 and Wi-Fi 7. B850 brings PCIe 5.0 at a lower tier. B650 is the mainstream choice. A620 suits basic builds and does not support CPU overclocking. Finally, check that the form factor fits the case: ATX, micro-ATX (mATX) or mini-ITX boards like the MPG B650I EDGE WIFI. Can a Ryzen 5000 processor go on a B650 or B850 board? No. Ryzen 5000 uses the AM4 socket and DDR4, so it needs a B550, B450 or A520 board.

Do B650 boards support Ryzen 9000? Yes, the AM5 B650 boards here list Ryzen 9000 support. An older board may need a BIOS update first.

Can DDR4 RAM be used on an AM5 motherboard? No. Every AM5 board takes DDR5 only.
