The Intel 13th Gen Core i5 chips here run from the 10 core, 16 thread Core i5 13400 and 13400F (up to 4.6 GHz, 65 W base power) through the 14 core, 20 thread Core i5 13500 (up to 4.8 GHz) to the unlocked Core i5 13600K and 13600KF (up to 5.1 GHz, 125 W base power). All use the LGA1700 socket and the Raptor Lake hybrid design. Intel covers them with a 3 year warranty.
Choose on three points. Graphics: the F models have no integrated graphics and need a separate graphics card, while the 13400, 13500 and 13600K can drive a display from the motherboard. Cooling: the 13400, 13400F and 13500 include an Intel cooler; the 13600K and 13600KF ship without one and, at up to 181 W turbo power, need a capable tower or liquid cooler. Board: overclocking the K models needs a chipset that allows it, while the locked chips run on any compatible LGA1700 board. DDR4 or DDR5 is set by the motherboard, not the processor.
Frequently asked questions
Will a 13th Gen Core i5 fit an older LGA1700 motherboard? The socket is the same, so most older LGA1700 boards accept these chips, though some need a BIOS update first.
What is the difference between the 13400 and the 13500? The 13500 has 14 cores and 20 threads against 10 and 16, and boosts to 4.8 GHz, which helps in rendering and editing.
Which Core i5 suits a gaming PC with a graphics card? The 13400F covers mainstream builds; the 13600KF adds speed and overclocking headroom.
