AMD Ryzen 9 7000 Series Processors

The Ryzen 9 7000 Series chips here are all Zen 4 desktop processors for the AM5 socket. They run from the 12-core, 24-thread Ryzen 9 7900 at 65 W and up to 5.4 GHz to the 16-core, 32-thread Ryzen 9 7950X and Ryzen 9 7950X3D at up to 5.7 GHz. The Ryzen 9 7900X and Ryzen 9 7900X3D sit in between with 12 cores and up to 5.6 GHz. Every model has basic integrated graphics, and AMD covers them with a 3 year warranty.

Choose by workload and cooling. For rendering, video encoding and heavy multi-threaded work, the 16-core 7950X gives the most cores at a 170 W TDP. For gaming, the X3D models add 3D V-Cache, extra L3 cache that helps frame rates in many games, and run at a lower 120 W TDP. The 7950X3D suits a combined gaming and creator PC. The 7900 is the only one with a cooler in the box, and its 65 W rating suits compact or quieter builds. The X and X3D chips need a separate air cooler or AIO, and the 170 W models need a strong one. All of them need an AM5 motherboard and DDR5 memory.

Frequently asked questions

Which motherboards support Ryzen 9 7000 processors? Any motherboard with the AM5 socket. For the 170 W 7950X and 7900X, pick a board with solid power delivery and good VRM cooling.

Do these processors work with DDR4 RAM? No. AM5 supports DDR5 memory only.

Is the 7950X3D or the 7950X better? The 7950X3D is usually faster in games because of its extra cache. The 7950X can be slightly quicker in some all-core workloads but draws more power.
