2TB M.2 NVMe Gen 4 SSDs

The 2TB PCIe Gen 4 NVMe drives here come from Samsung, WD and Corsair, all in the M.2 form factor. Rated read speeds run from 5000 MB/s on the Samsung 990 EVO to 7450 MB/s on the Samsung 990 PRO. In between sit the WD Black SN850X at 7300 MB/s, the WD Black SN7100 at 7250 MB/s, the WD Blue SN5100 at 7100 MB/s and the Corsair MP600 ELITE at 7000 MB/s. Every drive listed carries a 5 year manufacturer warranty.

For heavy, sustained work such as video editing, large game libraries or big project folders, the 990 PRO and SN850X are the picks, as both use a DRAM cache. The 990 EVO Plus, SN7100, SN5100 and MP600 ELITE are DRAM-less designs that still reach 7000 MB/s class reads and suit gaming and everyday desktop or laptop use. Choose a heatsink version (990 PRO, SN850X or MP600 ELITE) for a PS5 or a hot desktop slot, and a bare drive for laptops and boards with their own M.2 shields. The Samsung and WD models also have their own pages.

Frequently asked questions

Will a Gen 4 SSD work in a Gen 3 or Gen 5 M.2 slot? Yes. In a Gen 3 slot it is limited to the slower Gen 3 link speed, and in a Gen 5 slot it runs at its full Gen 4 speed.

Which of these drives works with the PS5? The WD Black SN850X with Heatsink is listed as PS5 compatible, and the heatsink version of the Samsung 990 PRO is also made for the console.

What is different about the Samsung 990 EVO? It can run on either a PCIe 4.0 x4 or a PCIe 5.0 x2 link, and its rated read and write speeds are lower, at 5000 and 4200 MB/s.
