960 GB U.2 / U.3 SSDs

The one 960 GB U.2 drive on this page is the Samsung PM9A3 960GB NVMe U.2 SSD (MZ-QL296000). It is a PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive built for servers and workstations. It reads at up to 6.5 GB/s and writes at up to 1.5 GB/s. Its power loss protection guards data being written if power cuts out. Samsung covers it with a 5 year warranty.

Before ordering, check that your server or workstation has a U.2 bay or port. These are common on server backplanes but rare on desktop motherboards.

Frequently asked questions

Can the PM9A3 work in a normal desktop PC? Only if the motherboard or an add-in card provides a U.2 connection, and most consumer boards lack one. Check your board's storage ports before buying.

Why is the write speed lower than the read speed? The PM9A3 is tuned for read-heavy server work. Its 1.5 GB/s sequential write at 960 GB is still well above any SATA SSD.
