The WD 4TB PCIe Gen5 drive here is the WD Black SN8100, in two versions: the bare WDS400T1X0M and the WDS400T1XHM with a heatsink. Both are M.2 NVMe drives rated for read and write speeds up to 14900/14000 MB/s, and WD covers them with a 5 year warranty.
The choice comes down to cooling. Pick the bare SN8100 if your motherboard has its own M.2 heatsink or if space is tight. Pick the heatsink version for an M.2 slot with no cooler, so the drive holds its speed under long transfers.
Frequently asked questions
What does the SN8100 need for full speed? A PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot on the motherboard. In a slower slot it runs at that slot's speed.
Is there a speed difference between the two versions? No, both are rated up to 14900/14000 MB/s. The only difference is the heatsink.
